About the Role

As a Vessel Captain at LNM1968, you'll command survey vessels during hydrographic mapping projects in coastal waters, rivers, harbors, and offshore locations. You'll navigate vessels safely, maintain positioning for survey operations, coordinate with hydrographic teams, and ensure all maritime safety regulations are followed.

This role requires extensive maritime experience, strong navigation skills, and the ability to work closely with scientific teams. You'll be responsible for vessel operations, crew safety, and supporting precision data collection in challenging marine environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Command and navigate survey vessels in coastal, harbor, and offshore waters
  • Maintain precise vessel positioning and track lines during survey operations
  • Ensure vessel and crew safety in accordance with USCG regulations
  • Coordinate with hydrographic teams on survey planning and execution
  • Monitor weather conditions and make operational decisions accordingly
  • Perform routine vessel maintenance and coordinate repairs
  • Maintain vessel logs, inspection records, and compliance documentation
  • Supervise deck crew and ensure proper safety procedures are followed

Required Qualifications

  • Valid USCG Captain's License (minimum 25-ton, 50-ton or 100-ton preferred)
  • 5+ years of experience commanding commercial or research vessels
  • Strong knowledge of marine navigation, piloting, and seamanship
  • Experience operating vessels in coastal and offshore environments
  • Proficiency with electronic navigation systems (GPS, radar, chartplotters)
  • Valid TWIC card and ability to pass background checks
  • Current medical certification and ability to work extended periods at sea

Preferred Skills

  • Experience supporting hydrographic or oceanographic research operations
  • Familiarity with dynamic positioning systems and survey vessel operations
  • Knowledge of tidal predictions, current patterns, and local navigation
  • Marine diesel engine maintenance and troubleshooting skills
  • Experience operating in port facilities and restricted waterways
